Lights and Helpers

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Aaron to light the seven lamps in His tent. The lamps gave light in front of the golden lampstand. Aaron did just what God said.

Then God told Moses to get the Levites ready to serve. They were washed with water. They washed their clothes. The people put their hands on the Levites.

This showed that the Levites were God's helpers for all the people. In the New Testament, Jesus is called the Light of the world (John 8:12). We can shine for God and help others too.

Memory Verse

“Speak to Aaron, and tell him, ‘When you light the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the lamp stand.’”

Presented to Yahweh

Name Date

Read the Story

Numbers 8 begins with the lampstand. God told Aaron that when he lit the lamps, the seven lamps should give light in front of it. Aaron did so. The lampstand was made of beaten gold.

Next, God told Moses to cleanse the Levites. They were sprinkled with water, shaved their whole bodies, and washed their clothes. The whole congregation gathered, and the people laid their hands on the Levites.

Aaron presented the Levites as a wave offering to Yahweh. God said, the Levites shall be mine. They took the place of Israel's firstborn. They served from age twenty-five to fifty. After that, the older Levites helped their brothers.

Numbers 8 · Grade 4

Cleansed for Service

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 8 opens with Aaron lighting the seven lamps so they shone forward. The lampstand of beaten gold was made according to the pattern God showed Moses. Light in God's house was a sign of His presence and care.

Then the Levites were prepared for their work. They were sprinkled with water of cleansing, shaved, and washed their clothes. The Israelites laid their hands on them, showing that the Levites served on behalf of the whole nation. The Levites then laid their hands on bulls for offerings, and Aaron presented them before Yahweh.

God explained that He had taken the Levites instead of the firstborn, whom He had made holy on the night He struck Egypt's firstborn. The Levites served from twenty-five to fifty, then helped younger Levites. In Acts 6, the apostles laid hands on seven men chosen to serve the church.

Numbers 8 · Grade 5

A Wave Offering of People

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 8 begins with a brief instruction about the lampstand: When you light the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the lamp stand. Aaron did so, and the text notes that the lampstand was beaten work of gold, according to the pattern which Yahweh had shown Moses. The light was to shine forward, illuminating the holy place.

The main subject is the cleansing of the Levites. Moses sprinkled them with the water of cleansing. They shaved their whole bodies and washed their clothes. Then the whole congregation assembled. The children of Israel laid their hands on the Levites, marking them as their representatives. Aaron offered the Levites as a wave offering before Yahweh, a striking picture of living people dedicated to God like an offering. Two bulls were offered for atonement.

God gave the reason: For they are wholly given to me from among the children of Israel; instead of all who open the womb, even the firstborn of all the children of Israel, I have taken them to me. The Levites served from twenty-five years old to fifty. After that they assisted their brothers in keeping the charge. The New Testament calls believers to present their bodies as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1). The church also laid hands on those sent out to serve (Acts 6:6; 13:3).
