Numbers 8 · Grade 5

A Wave Offering of People

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 8 begins with a brief instruction about the lampstand: When you light the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the lamp stand. Aaron did so, and the text notes that the lampstand was beaten work of gold, according to the pattern which Yahweh had shown Moses. The light was to shine forward, illuminating the holy place.

The main subject is the cleansing of the Levites. Moses sprinkled them with the water of cleansing. They shaved their whole bodies and washed their clothes. Then the whole congregation assembled. The children of Israel laid their hands on the Levites, marking them as their representatives. Aaron offered the Levites as a wave offering before Yahweh, a striking picture of living people dedicated to God like an offering. Two bulls were offered for atonement.

God gave the reason: For they are wholly given to me from among the children of Israel; instead of all who open the womb, even the firstborn of all the children of Israel, I have taken them to me. The Levites served from twenty-five years old to fifty. After that they assisted their brothers in keeping the charge. The New Testament calls believers to present their bodies as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1). The church also laid hands on those sent out to serve (Acts 6:6; 13:3).
