Numbers 8 · Grade 4
Cleansed for Service
Read and Think
Numbers 8 opens with Aaron lighting the seven lamps so they shone forward. The lampstand of beaten gold was made according to the pattern God showed Moses. Light in God's house was a sign of His presence and care.
Then the Levites were prepared for their work. They were sprinkled with water of cleansing, shaved, and washed their clothes. The Israelites laid their hands on them, showing that the Levites served on behalf of the whole nation. The Levites then laid their hands on bulls for offerings, and Aaron presented them before Yahweh.
God explained that He had taken the Levites instead of the firstborn, whom He had made holy on the night He struck Egypt's firstborn. The Levites served from twenty-five to fifty, then helped younger Levites. In Acts 6, the apostles laid hands on seven men chosen to serve the church.
