Making Things Right

Name Date

Read the Story

God lived in the middle of His people's camp. So God wanted the camp to be clean and good.

God said, If someone does wrong to another person, he must say he is sorry. He must give back what he took. He must add a little extra too.

In the New Testament, Jesus met a man named Zacchaeus who had taken money unfairly. Zacchaeus said he would give back four times as much (Luke 19:8). When we do wrong, we say sorry and try to make it right.

You shall put both male and female outside of the camp so that they don’t defile their camp, in the midst of which I dwell.”

Confess and Restore

Name Date

Read the Story

Numbers 5 begins with the camp. God said people with skin disease or other uncleanness must go outside the camp. Why? Because God dwelt in the middle of the camp.

Then God spoke about wrongdoing. When a man or woman sins against another person, it is also unfaithful to Yahweh. The person must confess the sin. He must pay back what he owed and add a fifth more.

If the person he wronged had died and had no relative, the payment went to the priest. In the New Testament, Zacchaeus showed this kind of change (Luke 19:8). He promised to repay anyone he had cheated, four times over.

Honesty in the Camp

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 5 shows that God's presence affected every part of camp life. Those with skin disease, discharges, or contact with a dead body went outside the camp, for God dwelt among His people.

Next, God addressed wrongdoing between people. Sin against a neighbor is also unfaithfulness to God. The guilty person had to confess, repay in full, and add one fifth. If no relative remained to receive it, the payment went to the priest along with an offering.

The chapter then gives a ceremony for a husband who suspected his wife of unfaithfulness but had no witness. Instead of letting him act on jealousy, the matter was brought before God. God alone would judge what was hidden. Jesus later praised Zacchaeus for repaying those he had wronged (Luke 19:8-9).

  2. What three things did the guilty person have to do?

  3. Who judged in the ceremony for the suspicious husband?

Numbers 5 · Grade 5

Confession and Restitution

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 5 applies God's holiness to the whole camp. Anyone with a skin disease, a discharge, or uncleanness from a dead body was to be sent outside, male and female alike, so that they would not defile their camp, in the midst of which I dwell. The presence of God among Israel was the reason for every rule.

Verses 5-10 teach that when a man or woman commits any sin that people commit, so as to trespass against Yahweh, that person is guilty. Wrongs against people are also offenses against God. The remedy had three parts: confess the sin, make full restitution, and add a fifth. If the wronged person had no kinsman, the restitution went to the priest, along with the ram of atonement. God's people were to make both relationships right, with God and with neighbor.

Verses 11-31 describe a ceremony for when a husband became jealous and suspected his wife, but there was no witness. Rather than allowing private suspicion or violence, the matter was brought to the priest and placed before Yahweh, who alone could judge the hidden truth. If she was innocent, she was declared free. The chapter shows God's concern for truth and justice in the home. In Luke 19, Zacchaeus showed true repentance by confessing and repaying fourfold, and Jesus said, Today, salvation has come to this house.

Show What You Know

  1. Why were the unclean sent outside the camp?

  2. What are wrongs against people also?

  3. What three parts did the remedy have?

  4. What did the jealousy ceremony prevent?

  5. What did Jesus say after Zacchaeus repented?
