Numbers 5 · Grade 4
Honesty in the Camp
Read and Think
Numbers 5 shows that God's presence affected every part of camp life. Those with skin disease, discharges, or contact with a dead body went outside the camp, for God dwelt among His people.
Next, God addressed wrongdoing between people. Sin against a neighbor is also unfaithfulness to God. The guilty person had to confess, repay in full, and add one fifth. If no relative remained to receive it, the payment went to the priest along with an offering.
The chapter then gives a ceremony for a husband who suspected his wife of unfaithfulness but had no witness. Instead of letting him act on jealousy, the matter was brought before God. God alone would judge what was hidden. Jesus later praised Zacchaeus for repaying those he had wronged (Luke 19:8-9).
