When it was time to move, God's tent had to come down. First the priests covered the holy things. They used blue, red, and purple cloths.

Then the Kohath family carried the holy things on poles. They did not touch them. The Gershon family carried the curtains. The Merari family carried the boards and posts.

Each man had a job to do. They worked from age thirty to fifty. God wanted His holy things carried with great care.

Numbers 4 describes the work of moving the tabernacle. The Levite men from thirty to fifty years old did this work. The Kohathites had the most holy things.

First Aaron and his sons took down the veil. They covered the ark with it. They covered the table, the lampstand, and the altars with cloths of blue, scarlet, and purple. They added skins and put in the poles.

Only then could the Kohathites carry them. They must not touch the holy things, or they would die. The Gershonites carried the curtains and coverings. The Merarites carried the boards, bars, pillars, and sockets. Everyone served by God's command.

Handling Holy Things

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 4 assigns duties to the three Levite clans for moving the tabernacle. Men from thirty to fifty years old were counted for this service. Their total was 8,580.

Aaron and his sons had to prepare the holy things first. They covered the ark with the veil, then skins, then a blue cloth. They covered the table, lampstand, and golden altar the same way. Only then did the Kohathites come to carry them on poles. If they touched the holy things, they would die.

The Gershonites carried the curtains and screens. The Merarites carried the frames and bases, each item assigned by name. The chapter shows that God is holy and that serving Him calls for care. Hebrews 12:28 says we should worship God with reverence and awe.

Each to His Service

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 4 counts the Levites again, this time those from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, who could enter the service to do the work in the Tent of Meeting. The chapter assigns each clan its burden when the camp set out.

The Kohathites carried the most holy things, but only after Aaron and his sons had prepared them. The priests took down the veil of the screen and covered the ark of the covenant with it, then with sealskin, then with a cloth of blue. They wrapped the table of show bread, the lampstand, the golden altar, and the vessels, and they inserted the carrying poles. The warning was serious: they shall not touch the sanctuary, lest they die. Eleazar oversaw the oil, incense, and the whole tabernacle.

The Gershonites, under Ithamar, carried the curtains, coverings, and screens. The Merarites, also under Ithamar, carried the boards, bars, pillars, sockets, pins, and cords, and you shall appoint by name the instruments of the charge of their burden. The total of Levites serving was 8,580. Every person and every object had its place. Paul writes that God has given each member of the body different gifts, so that all may serve together (1 Corinthians 12).
