Numbers 35 · Grade 4
Justice and Mercy
Read and Think
The Levites had no tribe land, so God gave them forty-eight cities across Israel. Six of these were cities of refuge, three on each side of the Jordan, spread out so anyone could reach one.
In ancient Israel, a close relative might try to avenge a death. But what if the death was an accident? God provided a safe place where the person could flee and receive a fair hearing. God cares about both justice and mercy.
The law treated deliberate murder very seriously and required more than one witness. The one who killed by accident stayed in the refuge city until the high priest died. Then he could return home safely.
