Cities of Refuge

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Israel to give the Levites forty-eight cities with pasture lands. Six of these would be cities of refuge.

If someone killed a person by accident, without hatred, he could flee to a city of refuge. There he was safe from the avenger. The congregation would judge between them. These cities were for Israelites and for strangers too.

The person had to stay in the city until the high priest died. Then he could go home. God said, Do not defile the land, for I dwell among the children of Israel.

Memory Verse

“These six cities shall be refuge for the children of Israel, for the stranger, and for the foreigner living among them, that everyone who kills any person unwittingly may flee there.”
