The Journeys of Israel

These are the journeys of the children of Israel when they went out of Egypt. Moses wrote their starting points by the commandment of Yahweh.

They left Rameses on the day after the Passover, while Egypt was burying its firstborn. They passed through the sea. At Elim there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees. Later they camped in the wilderness of Sinai.

Aaron the priest went up Mount Hor and died there. He was one hundred twenty-three years old. At last they camped in the plains of Moab. God told them to destroy the idols of the land and to take the land He had given them.

A Map of God's Faithfulness

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 33 is like a travel journal. By God's command, Moses wrote down every stop Israel made from Egypt to the plains of Moab. There are about forty stops. Many of the places cannot be found on a map today.

Some stops recall great events: the Passover night, the crossing of the sea, the springs of Elim, and Mount Sinai. Others are just names. Yet each one marked a place where God fed, guided, and protected His people.

At the end, God told Israel to drive out the people, destroy their idols, and divide the land by lot. If they let idols remain, those things would trouble them. Remembering the journey helped Israel trust God for what came next.

  3. What did each stop mark?

  4. What would happen if Israel let idols remain?

Every Step Recorded

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 33 opens: These are the journeys of the children of Israel, when they went out of the land of Egypt by their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron. Moses wrote the starting points of their journeys by the commandment of Yahweh. The record lists about forty campsites. Scholars debate the location of many of them, so we should be careful not to claim certainty about where each one was.

The journey began at Rameses on the fifteenth day of the first month, the day after the Passover, while the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn. On their gods also Yahweh executed judgments. The list passes the sea, Marah, and Elim with its twelve springs and seventy palm trees. It moves on to Rephidim, where there was no water, Sinai, Kadesh, and Mount Hor. There Aaron died at 123 years old, in the fortieth year. Even dull-sounding names were real places where God sustained His people.

God then spoke in the plains of Moab. Israel was to drive out the inhabitants, destroy their stone figures and molten images, and demolish their high places. They were to divide the land by lot. If they failed, those who remained would be irritants in your eyes, and thorns in your sides. The book of Judges shows this warning coming true. Like Israel, Christians are pilgrims (Hebrews 11:13), and God who led every step will bring His people home.

Show What You Know

  1. Why should we be careful about locating each campsite?

  2. What happened to Egypt's gods?

  3. How old was Aaron when he died?

  4. What would remaining inhabitants become if Israel failed?

  5. Which book shows the warning coming true?
