A Promise to Help

Name Date

Read the Story

The tribes of Reuben and Gad had lots of sheep and cows. They saw good land for animals on the east side of the Jordan River. They asked Moses, Can we live here?

Moses was worried. He asked, Will your brothers fight while you sit here? He did not want them to make the others afraid, like the spies had.

Reuben and Gad promised to cross the river and help their brothers. We will not go home until everyone has their land, they said. Moses agreed. They kept their promise.

Memory Verse

“We will not return to our houses until the children of Israel have all received their inheritance.”

Be Sure Your Sin Will Find You Out

Name Date

Read the Story

The children of Reuben and Gad had very many cattle. They saw that the land of Jazer and Gilead was good for cattle. They asked Moses not to bring them over the Jordan.

Moses said, Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here? He reminded them that their fathers discouraged Israel at Kadesh. They answered, We will build sheepfolds and cities for our little ones. But we ourselves will go armed before Israel. We will not return to our houses until Israel has received their inheritance.

Moses agreed. But if you will not do so, you have sinned against Yahweh, he warned. Be sure your sin will find you out. So Moses gave land to Gad, Reuben, and half of Manasseh east of the Jordan.

Memory Verse

“But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against Yahweh; and be sure your sin will find you out.

Don't Leave Your Brothers

Name Date

Read and Think

As Israel neared the Jordan, Reuben and Gad saw that the lands they had just conquered were perfect for their large herds. They asked to stay east of the river. To Moses, it sounded like the spies all over again. He worried that their choice would discourage the other tribes.

Moses spoke sharply, reminding them how the first generation's fear had brought forty years of wandering. The tribes responded with a solution. They would settle their families and flocks, then send their fighting men across the Jordan ahead of Israel until the land was won.

Moses accepted but warned that failing to keep this promise would be sin against Yahweh, and it would find them out. Joshua 22 records that they did keep their word. Unity matters to God, and His people must not leave others to struggle alone.

Numbers 32 · Grade 5

Your Sin Will Find You Out

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 32 tests whether the new generation has learned from the old. The children of Reuben and Gad had a very great multitude of livestock, and the land of Jazer and Gilead was a place for livestock. They asked, Don't bring us over the Jordan. Moses heard echoes of Kadesh: Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here? Why do you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which Yahweh has given them? Your fathers did so. If they turned away, God would again leave Israel in the wilderness.

The tribes came near with a careful proposal. We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones; but we ourselves will be ready armed to go before the children of Israel. We will not return to our houses until the children of Israel have all received their inheritance. Moses accepted, provided they kept their word before Yahweh.

Then came the famous warning: But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against Yahweh; and be sure your sin will find you out. In context, the sin would be failing to keep their promise and leaving their brothers to fight alone. Moses commanded Eleazar and Joshua to hold them to it, and gave the kingdoms of Sihon and Og to Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. Joshua 22:1-4 later praises them for not leaving their brothers. Paul urges believers to bear one another's burdens (Galatians 6:2).
