Read and Think

As Israel neared the Jordan, Reuben and Gad saw that the lands they had just conquered were perfect for their large herds. They asked to stay east of the river. To Moses, it sounded like the spies all over again. He worried that their choice would discourage the other tribes.

Moses spoke sharply, reminding them how the first generation's fear had brought forty years of wandering. The tribes responded with a solution. They would settle their families and flocks, then send their fighting men across the Jordan ahead of Israel until the land was won.

Moses accepted but warned that failing to keep this promise would be sin against Yahweh, and it would find them out. Joshua 22 records that they did keep their word. Unity matters to God, and His people must not leave others to struggle alone.
