Promises to God

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses talked to the leaders of the tribes. He told them about promises made to God. A promise to God is called a vow.

God said, If you make a promise to God, keep it! Do what you said you would do.

A father or husband could hear a vow and help decide about it. In the New Testament, Jesus said, Let your yes be yes (Matthew 5:37). God always keeps His promises, and He wants us to keep ours.

Memory Verse

“When a man vows a vow to Yahweh, or swears an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.”

He Shall Not Break His Word

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes and said, This is the thing which Yahweh has commanded. When a man vows a vow to Yahweh, he shall not break his word. He shall do all that comes out of his mouth.

If a young woman living in her father's house made a vow, her father could cancel it on the day he heard it. If he said nothing, it stood. The same was true for a wife and her husband.

A widow or divorced woman's vow would stand. These laws show that words spoken to God are serious. In the New Testament, Jesus taught that we should simply let our yes be yes and our no be no (Matthew 5:37).

Read and Think

Numbers 30 is about vows, solemn promises made to God. The main rule is simple: if a man vows a vow to Yahweh, he must not break his word. He must do everything he said he would.

In Israel's households, a father or husband was responsible for the family. If a daughter or wife made a vow, he could cancel it on the day he heard about it. If he stayed silent, it stood. If he canceled it later, he would bear the guilt.

A widow or divorced woman had no husband over her household, so her vows stood. The chapter teaches that God listens to our words. Jesus said in Matthew 5:37 to let our yes be yes and our no be no.

Let Your Yes Be Yes

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 30 turns from public offerings to personal promises. Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes: When a man vows a vow to Yahweh, or swears an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth. A vow was voluntary, but once made, it bound the person before God. Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 later says it is better not to vow than to vow and not pay.

The chapter then addresses vows within households. A young woman in her father's house, or a wife, could make a vow, but the father or husband could make it void on the day he heard it. If he said nothing that day, it stood. If he canceled it after letting it stand, he would bear her iniquity. In that society, the head of a household carried responsibility for its property and obligations, and the law protected the family from rash promises.

The vow of a widow, or of her who is divorced, would stand against her, because she answered for her own household. The point throughout is that words spoken before God are serious. Jesus raised the standard in Matthew 5:33-37. Instead of relying on oaths, His followers should be so truthful that a simple yes or no can be trusted. God Himself is the model, for every promise of God is Yes in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20).
