Numbers 30 · Grade 4
Words That Matter
Read and Think
Numbers 30 is about vows, solemn promises made to God. The main rule is simple: if a man vows a vow to Yahweh, he must not break his word. He must do everything he said he would.
In Israel's households, a father or husband was responsible for the family. If a daughter or wife made a vow, he could cancel it on the day he heard about it. If he stayed silent, it stood. If he canceled it later, he would bear the guilt.
A widow or divorced woman had no husband over her household, so her vows stood. The chapter teaches that God listens to our words. Jesus said in Matthew 5:37 to let our yes be yes and our no be no.
