Numbers 30 · Grade 3
He Shall Not Break His Word
Read the Story
Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes and said, This is the thing which Yahweh has commanded. When a man vows a vow to Yahweh, he shall not break his word. He shall do all that comes out of his mouth.
If a young woman living in her father's house made a vow, her father could cancel it on the day he heard it. If he said nothing, it stood. The same was true for a wife and her husband.
A widow or divorced woman's vow would stand. These laws show that words spoken to God are serious. In the New Testament, Jesus taught that we should simply let our yes be yes and our no be no (Matthew 5:37).
Memory Verse
“When a man vows a vow to Yahweh, or swears an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.”
