The New Generation

Name Date

Read the Story

After the plague, Yahweh told Moses and Eleazar to take a census. They counted men twenty and older who could go to war. They were in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan at Jericho.

The total was 601,730. The land would be divided by lot. Big tribes would get more land. Small tribes would get less. The Levites were counted apart. They would get no land.

From the first count at Sinai, only two men were left. They were Caleb and Joshua. God had said the unbelieving generation would die in the wilderness. Now He was ready to bring their children in.

Numbers 26 · Grade 4

Ready for the Promise

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 1 counted the generation that left Egypt. Numbers 26 counts their children, nearly forty years later, on the edge of the land. The book turns from death in the wilderness to hope for the future.

The new total, 601,730, was close to the first census. Some tribes grew and others shrank, but God had preserved the nation. The text notes that the sons of Korah did not die, showing God's mercy within judgment. Each tribe would receive land in proportion to its size, assigned by lot.

Only Caleb and Joshua remained from the old count. God had said the rest would die in the wilderness, and His word came true. That is sobering, but it is also comforting. The same God who keeps His warnings keeps His promises.

  2. How did the new total compare to the first census?

  3. What does the note about Korah's sons show?

  4. Why is God keeping His warnings comforting?

Numbers 26 · Grade 5

A Census of Hope

Name Date

Read and Think

After the plague at Baal Peor, Yahweh told Moses and Eleazar to number the congregation from twenty years old and upward by their fathers' houses. Numbers began with a census at Sinai, and now a second census marks the start of a new chapter. The first generation's story ended in unbelief. This generation stood in the plains of Moab across from Jericho, ready to enter.

Each tribe is listed with its clans and totals. Reuben's list recalls Dathan and Abiram, but adds, Notwithstanding, the sons of Korah didn't die. Judah's list recalls Er and Onan. The total came to six hundred one thousand seven hundred thirty, close to the first count. The land would be divided by lot, and to the more you shall give the more inheritance. The Levites, twenty-three thousand males, were counted apart because no inheritance was given to them.

The chapter ends with a solemn summary. Among those counted there was not a man of them who were counted by Moses and Aaron in the wilderness of Sinai. For Yahweh had said they would surely die in the wilderness. There was not a man left, except Caleb and Joshua. Hebrews 3 and 4 use this to warn against unbelief and to invite us into God's rest. God's faithfulness to Caleb and Joshua shows that trusting Him is never wasted.
