A Star Will Come

Name Date

Read the Story

Balaam looked down from a hill. He saw God's people living in tents. He said, How goodly are your tents! God blessed His people again.

King Balak was very angry. He said, Go home! You were supposed to curse them. But Balaam said, I can only say what God says.

Then Balaam said something special. He said a star would come out of Jacob. That meant a great King would come from God's people. Christians believe this star points to Jesus (Revelation 22:16).

The Star and the Scepter

Name Date

Read the Story

Balaam saw that it pleased Yahweh to bless Israel. He lifted his eyes and saw Israel camped by tribes, and the Spirit of God came on him. He said, How goodly are your tents, Jacob, and your dwellings, Israel!

Balak's anger burned. He struck his hands together and said, I called you to curse my enemies, and you have blessed them three times! Flee to your place! Balaam reminded him that he could only speak what Yahweh says.

Before leaving, Balaam spoke about the future. I see him, but not now. A star will come out of Jacob. A scepter will rise out of Israel. Many Christians see this as a picture of Jesus, the King from Israel. In Revelation 22:16, Jesus calls Himself the bright morning star.

A King from Jacob

Name Date

Read and Think

This time Balaam did not look for omens. Seeing that it pleased Yahweh to bless Israel, he turned toward the wilderness and saw the tribes camped in order. The Spirit of God came on him, and he praised Israel's tents as lovely as gardens by a river. He repeated God's promise: Everyone who blesses you is blessed. Everyone who curses you is cursed.

Balak was furious and said Yahweh had kept Balaam from honor. Balaam reminded him that even a house full of silver and gold could not make him go beyond God's word. Then he told Balak what Israel would do to Moab in the latter days.

Balaam saw a star coming out of Jacob and a scepter rising out of Israel. A star and scepter are pictures of a ruler. God was promising a coming King. Christians believe this points to Jesus, born of Israel, whose kingdom has no end.

Numbers 24 · Grade 5

I See Him, but Not Now

Name Date

Read and Think

In his third oracle, Balaam no longer went to seek enchantments. He saw that it pleased Yahweh to bless Israel. The Spirit of God came on him, and he spoke as one whose eyes were opened: How goodly are your tents, Jacob, and your dwellings, Israel! He pictured them as valleys spread out, gardens by a river, and cedars beside the waters. He echoed Genesis 49:9 and Genesis 12:3, comparing Israel to a lion and declaring, Everyone who blesses you is blessed.

Balak's anger burned against Balaam, and he struck his hands together. I called you to curse my enemies, and, behold, you have altogether blessed them these three times. He said Yahweh had kept Balaam back from honor. Balaam replied that he had told Balak's messengers that even a house full of silver and gold could not make him go beyond Yahweh's word.

Then came the fourth oracle: I see him, but not now. I see him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob. A scepter will rise out of Israel. The prophecy looked far ahead. It may have been partly fulfilled in David, who defeated Moab and Edom (2 Samuel 8). Christians see its full fulfillment in Jesus, the Son of David, who says in Revelation 22:16, I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright and morning star. Balaam also spoke of Amalek, the Kenites, and ships from Kittim, and then went home.
