Balaam's Donkey

Name Date

Read the Story

Israel camped in the plains of Moab. Balak king of Moab was very afraid, because Israel was so many. He sent princes to hire Balaam to curse Israel. God said to Balaam, You shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.

Balak sent more princes and promised great honor. God let Balaam go, but only to say what God told him. As Balaam rode, the angel of Yahweh stood in the way with a sword. The donkey turned aside, crushed Balaam's foot against a wall, and finally lay down. Each time Balaam struck her.

Yahweh opened the mouth of the donkey. She said, What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times? Then Yahweh opened Balaam's eyes, and he saw the angel. Balaam said, I have sinned. The angel said, Speak only the word that I speak to you.
