The Snake on a Pole

Snakes came and bit the people. The people said, We have sinned. Please pray for us! Moses prayed for them.

God told Moses to make a snake out of bronze and put it on a pole. Anyone who was bitten could look at it and live. In the New Testament, Jesus said He would be lifted up like the snake (John 3:14-15). Whoever trusts in Him has life.

Read the Story

The people became impatient on the long road around Edom. They spoke against God and Moses. They said there was no bread and no water, and they hated the food.

Yahweh sent venomous snakes among them, and many died. The people came to Moses and said, We have sinned. Pray to Yahweh. So Moses prayed for the people.

God said, Make a snake and set it on a pole. Moses made a serpent of bronze. When anyone who was bitten looked at it, he lived. In John 3:14-15, Jesus said He must be lifted up the same way, so whoever believes in Him will have eternal life.

Numbers 21 · Grade 4

Lifted Up for Healing

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 21 begins with victory, as God gave Israel the cities of Arad. But on the long road around Edom, the people grew impatient. They spoke against God and Moses and called the manna disgusting food, despising God's daily gift.

God sent venomous snakes, and many died. This time the people confessed, We have sinned, and asked Moses to pray. God did not simply remove the snakes. He told Moses to make a bronze snake on a pole. Anyone bitten who looked at it would live.

Healing came by looking in faith at what God provided, not by medicine or effort. Jesus used this story to explain the gospel to Nicodemus in John 3:14-15. Just as Moses lifted up the serpent, the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that whoever believes in Him will have eternal life.

Show What You Know

  1. What did the people call the manna?

  2. What was different about the people's response this time?

  3. How did God provide healing?

  4. Who did Jesus explain this story to?

Numbers 21 · Grade 5

As Moses Lifted Up the Serpent

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 21 marks a turning point. The new generation began to win battles, starting at Hormah, the place where their parents had been defeated in chapter 14. Yet on the detour around Edom, the soul of the people was impatient. They spoke against God and against Moses: Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, there is no water, and our soul loathes this disgusting food! They despised the manna God sent each day.

Yahweh sent venomous snakes among the people, and many died. The people came and confessed, We have sinned, because we have spoken against Yahweh and against you. Pray to Yahweh. Moses prayed. God's remedy was surprising: Make a venomous snake, and set it on a pole. Everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live. The image of the curse became the means of healing for anyone who looked to it in faith.

Israel journeyed on. At Beer, God said, Gather the people together, and I will give them water, and Israel sang. They defeated Sihon king of the Amorites and Og king of Bashan, the first lands east of the Jordan. Jesus said in John 3:14-15, As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. Later, 2 Kings 18:4 records that King Hezekiah destroyed the bronze serpent because people had begun to burn incense to it.

  1. Why was Hormah significant?

  2. What did the people confess?

  3. What was surprising about God's remedy?
