Numbers 21 · Grade 4
Lifted Up for Healing
Read and Think
Numbers 21 begins with victory, as God gave Israel the cities of Arad. But on the long road around Edom, the people grew impatient. They spoke against God and Moses and called the manna disgusting food, despising God's daily gift.
God sent venomous snakes, and many died. This time the people confessed, We have sinned, and asked Moses to pray. God did not simply remove the snakes. He told Moses to make a bronze snake on a pole. Anyone bitten who looked at it would live.
Healing came by looking in faith at what God provided, not by medicine or effort. Jesus used this story to explain the gospel to Nicodemus in John 3:14-15. Just as Moses lifted up the serpent, the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that whoever believes in Him will have eternal life.
