By Their Banners

Name Date

Read the Story

In Numbers 2, God gave Moses and Aaron a plan for the camp. The tabernacle stood in the center. The Levites camped right around it. Then the other twelve tribes camped farther out, three on each side.

Each tribe camped by its own banner, or flag. On the east, toward the sunrise, were Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. Judah went first when the camp moved. Reuben's group camped on the south, Ephraim's on the west, and Dan's on the north.

When they traveled, they kept the same order. The tabernacle and the Levites marched in the middle. Thus the children of Israel did. Their camp showed that God lived among them and was at the heart of all they did.

Memory Verse

“Thus the children of Israel did. According to all that Yahweh commanded Moses, so they encamped by their standards, and so they set out, everyone by their families, according to their fathers’ houses.”

Numbers 2 · Grade 4

A Camp with God at the Center

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 2 describes how God arranged Israel's camp. The tabernacle stood at the center, with the Levites close around it. The other tribes camped in four groups of three, each under its own banner, on the east, south, west, and north.

The east side, facing the sunrise and the tabernacle's entrance, belonged to Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. Judah led the march. Reuben's camp was on the south, Ephraim's on the west, and Dan's on the north, with Dan's group at the rear. Every tribe knew its place.

This orderly camp was a picture of a people organized around God's presence. Later, Jacob's blessing and the prophets show Judah as the tribe of kings, and Jesus came from Judah. Revelation 21:3 looks ahead to the day when God's dwelling will be with His people forever.

Numbers 2 · Grade 5

Around the Tent of Meeting

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 2 turns the census into a camp plan. God told Moses and Aaron that each man shall encamp by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers' houses, at a distance surrounding the Tent of Meeting. The tabernacle stood in the middle; the Levites formed an inner ring; and the twelve tribes formed the outer square in four groups of three.

The east, the side of the tabernacle's entrance, belonged to Judah with Issachar and Zebulun, numbering 186,400. They set out first on the march. Reuben, Simeon, and Gad camped on the south; Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin on the west; and Dan, Asher, and Naphtali on the north, setting out last. The Tent of Meeting moved in the middle of the camps, so God's presence was always central, whether resting or traveling.

The chapter ends with a familiar refrain: Thus the children of Israel did. According to all that Yahweh commanded Moses, so they encamped by their standards, and so they set out. The arrangement taught that God was not on the edge of Israel's life but at its heart. The prophets later picture God dwelling in the midst of His people (Zechariah 2:10), and John 1:14 says the Word became flesh and dwelt, literally tabernacled, among us.

Show What You Know

  1. How did each man encamp?

  2. Which group set out first on the march?

  3. Where did the Tent of Meeting move during travel?

  4. What did the arrangement teach?

  5. What does John 1:14 say the Word did?
