Numbers 2 · Grade 4
A Camp with God at the Center
Read and Think
Numbers 2 describes how God arranged Israel's camp. The tabernacle stood at the center, with the Levites close around it. The other tribes camped in four groups of three, each under its own banner, on the east, south, west, and north.
The east side, facing the sunrise and the tabernacle's entrance, belonged to Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. Judah led the march. Reuben's camp was on the south, Ephraim's on the west, and Dan's on the north, with Dan's group at the rear. Every tribe knew its place.
This orderly camp was a picture of a people organized around God's presence. Later, Jacob's blessing and the prophets show Judah as the tribe of kings, and Jesus came from Judah. Revelation 21:3 looks ahead to the day when God's dwelling will be with His people forever.
