Special Water

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses to find a red cow. It could not have anything wrong with it.

The cow was burned outside the camp. The priest put cedar wood, a plant called hyssop, and red yarn into the fire. The ashes were saved and mixed with water.

If someone touched a person who had died, he was not clean for seven days. He was sprinkled with the special water on day three and day seven. Then he was clean. God gave a way to be clean again.

Memory Verse

Ashes and Running Water

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses and Aaron to bring a red heifer without blemish, which had never worn a yoke. Eleazar the priest took her outside the camp. She was burned there.

The priest threw cedar wood, hyssop, and scarlet into the fire. A clean man gathered the ashes and kept them in a clean place outside the camp. They were used in water for cleansing.

Anyone who touched a dead body was unclean seven days. A clean person dipped hyssop in the water and sprinkled him on the third day and the seventh day. Then he washed and was clean at evening. God made a way back.

Numbers 19 · Grade 4

Clean from Death

Name Date

Read and Think

In Numbers 19, God gave Israel a way to deal with the uncleanness that came from contact with death. Death was part of life in the wilderness, and a whole generation would die there. God did not leave His people unable to come near Him.

A red heifer without defect was burned outside the camp along with cedar wood, hyssop, and scarlet. A clean man stored the ashes. When needed, the ashes were mixed with running water. This water for cleansing was called a sin offering.

Anyone who touched a dead body, a bone, or a grave was unclean for seven days. He was sprinkled on the third and seventh days and then was clean. Hebrews 9:13-14 says the ashes of a heifer cleansed the body. It says the blood of Christ cleanses our conscience much more.

Numbers 19 · Grade 5

Water for Impurity

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 19 sits between stories of rebellion and death. The old generation was dying in the wilderness, and contact with the dead made people unclean. God provided a remedy. A red heifer without spot or blemish, which had never been yoked, was given to Eleazar, taken outside the camp, and killed. Eleazar sprinkled some of its blood toward the front of the Tent of Meeting seven times.

The whole heifer was burned, and the priest cast cedar wood, hyssop, and scarlet into the fire. A clean man gathered the ashes and laid them up outside the camp in a clean place for use in water for cleansing impurity. It is a sin offering. Everyone involved became unclean until evening, a reminder that dealing with sin and death affected even those who served.

Anyone who touched the dead body of a person was unclean seven days. If he would not purify himself, he defiled the tabernacle and was cut off. A clean person dipped hyssop in the water and sprinkled the unclean on the third and seventh days. Hebrews 9:13-14 reasons: if the ashes of a heifer sanctify for the cleanness of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Jesus also conquered death itself.
