God Is Their Gift

Name Date

Read the Story

The people were afraid to come near God's tent. So God gave Aaron and his sons the job of taking care of it. The Levites helped them.

The priests and Levites did not get land like the other tribes. Instead, the people gave them some of their food. They gave the best oil, the best grapes, and the first grain.

God said to Aaron, I am your portion. That means God Himself was their best gift. The Levites also gave a tenth of what they got to God.

Memory Verse

“You may eat it anywhere, you and your households, for it is your reward in return for your service in the Tent of Meeting.”

I Am Your Inheritance

Name Date

Read the Story

After chapter 17, the people cried that anyone who came near the tabernacle would die. God gave Aaron and his sons the duty of the sanctuary and the altar. Then there would be no more wrath on Israel. The Levites were given to help them.

God gave the priests holy portions from the offerings. They received the best of the oil, the best of the vintage, and the first fruits of the grain. The firstborn belonged to God, and firstborn sons were redeemed with money.

Yahweh said to Aaron, You shall have no inheritance in their land. I am your portion and your inheritance. The Levites received a tithe from Israel. It was their reward for their service. Then they gave a tenth of that tithe to Yahweh, from its best parts.

When God Is Your Portion

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 18 answers the terrified cry at the end of chapter 17. The people feared they would all perish near God's holy dwelling. God's answer was order and protection. Aaron and his sons would bear responsibility for the sanctuary and the priesthood, and the Levites would help them, so that wrath would not fall on Israel.

God called the priesthood a gift. He gave the priests portions from the offerings, the firstfruits, and the firstborn. He called these an everlasting covenant of salt, meaning a lasting agreement. Firstborn sons were redeemed for five shekels.

Most importantly, God told Aaron that he would have no land. God said, I am your portion and your inheritance. The Levites received the tithes of Israel, and they gave a tithe of the best back to God. Everyone, even those who served, gave to God.

Numbers 18 · Grade 5

No Land, but the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

The chapter answers Israel's cry, Behold, we perish! God appointed Aaron and his sons to bear the iniquity of the sanctuary and of the priesthood. The Levites, joined to Aaron, would keep the duties of the tent but not come near the holy vessels or the altar. God said this was so that there be no more wrath on the children of Israel. Careful order was a mercy that protected a sinful people living near a holy God.

God described the priesthood as a gift: I give you the service of the priesthood as a gift. He gave the priests the holy parts of offerings, all the best of the oil, the vintage, and the grain, and the firstfruits. Every firstborn belonged to God. Firstborn sons and unclean animals were redeemed. This is called a covenant of salt forever before Yahweh.

Then came the heart of the chapter: Yahweh said to Aaron, You shall have no inheritance in their land, neither shall you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the children of Israel. The Levites received the tithe, and gave a tithe of the tithe, the best part, to Yahweh. Psalm 16:5 echoes this: Yahweh assigned my portion and my cup. Peter calls believers a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9), and in Christ, God Himself is our inheritance.
