Numbers 14 · Grade 4
The Cost of Unbelief
Read and Think
Numbers 14 is one of the saddest chapters in the journey. The people wept all night and wished they had died in Egypt. They even planned to choose a new leader and go back. Joshua and Caleb begged them to trust God, saying the land was exceedingly good and Yahweh was with them.
The people answered by threatening to stone them. Then God's glory appeared at the tent. God spoke of judgment, but Moses prayed. He reminded God of His great name and His character: slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity. God answered, I have pardoned according to your word.
Forgiveness did not remove every consequence. That generation would wander forty years and die in the wilderness, but their children would enter. When some tried to go up anyway without the ark or Moses, they were defeated. Obedience must be on God's terms and in His time.
