A Land of Milk and Honey

Name Date

Read the Story

Yahweh told Moses to send men to spy out Canaan, one leader from every tribe. Caleb came from Judah. Hoshea came from Ephraim, and Moses called him Joshua.

They explored the land for forty days. At the valley of Eshcol, they cut down one cluster of grapes. Two men carried it on a staff. They also brought back pomegranates and figs.

They said the land flows with milk and honey. But they also said the cities were walled and the people were strong. Caleb stilled the people and said, Let's go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able. The others gave a bad report and spread fear.

Two Kinds of Reports

Name Date

Read and Think

God commanded Moses to send twelve tribal leaders to explore Canaan. Moses told them to see what the land was like, whether the people were strong or weak, and whether the cities were open or walled. He also asked them to bring back some fruit. Hoshea of Ephraim received the new name Joshua.

After forty days the spies returned. The fruit proved the land was rich, just as God had said. But ten spies focused on the strong people and fortified cities. Caleb quieted the crowd and said they should go up at once, because they could surely win.

The ten then spread a bad report, saying the land devoured its people and that they looked like grasshoppers in their own sight. They measured the problem against themselves instead of against God. Caleb measured it against God's promise.

Numbers 13 · Grade 5

Grasshoppers in Their Own Sight

Name Date

Read and Think

At Yahweh's command, Moses sent twelve men, every one a leader, from the wilderness of Paran to spy out the land of Canaan. He told them to go up into the hill country and see the land: whether the people were strong or weak, few or many, whether the cities were camps or strongholds, and whether the land was fat or lean. Be courageous, he added, and bring some of the fruit of the land. It was the season of the first ripe grapes.

They traveled from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, and they came to Hebron. At the valley of Eshcol they cut a branch with one cluster of grapes and carried it on a staff between two men. After forty days they returned with the fruit and reported: Surely it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large.

Caleb stilled the people before Moses and said, Let's go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. But the others insisted they could not, and they brought up an evil report of the land. They claimed they had seen the Nephilim and said, We were in our own sight as grasshoppers. Both groups saw the same land and the same people. The difference was faith. Hebrews 3:19 explains that they could not enter because of unbelief. Caleb believed God's promise, and that made him bold.

  1. What questions did Moses tell the spies to answer?

  2. Where did they cut the cluster of grapes?

  3. What did Caleb say?

  4. How did the ten spies describe themselves?

  5. According to Hebrews 3:19, why could they not enter?
