Grumbling in the Camp

Name Date

Read the Story

God's people began to complain. They forgot all the good things God had done. Moses prayed, and God listened.

Then they cried, We want meat! We miss the food in Egypt! All we see is this manna. But manna was a gift from God every morning.

Moses felt the job was too big for him alone. God gave him seventy helpers. God sent birds called quail for meat. God wanted His people to trust Him and be thankful.

Memory Verse

Yahweh said to Moses, “Has Yahweh’s hand grown short? Now you will see whether my word will happen to you or not.”

Is Yahweh's Hand Short?

Name Date

Read the Story

Numbers 11 begins with complaining. Fire from Yahweh burned at the edge of the camp. The people cried to Moses, Moses prayed, and the fire stopped.

Then some people craved meat. They wept, remembering the fish, cucumbers, melons, and onions of Egypt. They forgot they had been slaves there. Moses told God, I am not able to bear all this people alone.

God took some of the Spirit that was on Moses and put it on seventy elders. They prophesied. Then God asked, Has Yahweh's hand grown short? A wind brought quail around the camp. God provided, but He was grieved by their ungrateful hearts.

A Heavy Burden

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 11 shows how quickly Israel's trust turned to complaining. After God's fire burned at the edge of the camp, Moses prayed and it stopped. Then the mixed multitude began to crave, and Israel wept for the fish and vegetables of Egypt. They called God's daily manna boring.

Moses was overwhelmed. He told God the people were too heavy for him to carry alone. God answered with help. He placed His Spirit on seventy elders. When two elders, Eldad and Medad, prophesied in the camp, Joshua wanted them stopped. Moses said he wished all of God's people were prophets.

God sent so many quail that they lay around the camp. But a plague struck those who had craved. Their problem was not hunger but a heart that rejected God. In Acts 2, God poured out His Spirit on all His people, as Moses had wished.

The Spirit and the Quail

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 11 records the first of several rebellions on the journey from Sinai. The people complained in the hearing of Yahweh, and fire burned at the edge of the camp until Moses prayed. The place was named Taberah, meaning burning. Soon the mixed multitude among them lusted exceedingly, and Israel wept: Who will give us meat to eat? We remember the fish, which we ate in Egypt for nothing. They despised the manna, though it fell with the dew every night.

Moses brought an honest and painful prayer. He asked why God had laid the burden of all this people on him, as if he had given birth to them. I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. God responded with grace. He took of the Spirit that was on Moses and put it on seventy elders, who prophesied. Eldad and Medad prophesied in the camp, and when Joshua urged Moses to forbid them, Moses replied, I wish that all Yahweh's people were prophets, that Yahweh would put his Spirit on them!

God also promised meat for a whole month. When Moses doubted, God asked, Has Yahweh's hand grown short? A wind brought quail from the sea in great numbers. But while the meat was still between their teeth, a plague struck, and the place was named Kibroth Hattaavah, the graves of craving. Psalm 78 later reflects on this event as a warning against testing God. On the day of Pentecost, Peter announced that God had poured out His Spirit on all flesh (Acts 2:17), fulfilling Moses' wish.
