Numbers 11 · Grade 4
A Heavy Burden
Read and Think
Numbers 11 shows how quickly Israel's trust turned to complaining. After God's fire burned at the edge of the camp, Moses prayed and it stopped. Then the mixed multitude began to crave, and Israel wept for the fish and vegetables of Egypt. They called God's daily manna boring.
Moses was overwhelmed. He told God the people were too heavy for him to carry alone. God answered with help. He placed His Spirit on seventy elders. When two elders, Eldad and Medad, prophesied in the camp, Joshua wanted them stopped. Moses said he wished all of God's people were prophets.
God sent so many quail that they lay around the camp. But a plague struck those who had craved. Their problem was not hunger but a heart that rejected God. In Acts 2, God poured out His Spirit on all His people, as Moses had wished.
