Rise Up, Yahweh

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses to make two trumpets of hammered silver. The sons of Aaron blew them. One kind of blast called the people to gather. An alarm told the camps to set out.

On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year, the cloud lifted. Israel left the wilderness of Sinai. They marched in order, with Judah first and the tabernacle in the middle.

Moses asked Hobab to come with them. He said, You can be our eyes in the wilderness. When the ark set forward, Moses prayed, Rise up, Yahweh, and let your enemies be scattered! When it rested, he prayed for God to return to Israel.

Numbers 10 · Grade 4

Leaving Sinai

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 10 marks a turning point. After nearly a year at Mount Sinai, Israel was ready to move. God commanded two silver trumpets to gather the congregation, signal the camps to march, sound alarms in battle, and celebrate at feasts. In battle, God said, you will be remembered before Yahweh your God.

When the cloud lifted, the tribes set out by their banners in the order God gave. Judah led. The Gershonites and Merarites carried the tabernacle frame ahead, so it could be set up before the Kohathites arrived with the holy things.

Moses invited Hobab to come and share in the good God would do. Then, as the ark of the covenant went before them, Moses prayed for God to rise up and scatter His enemies. When it rested, he prayed, Return, Yahweh. Israel's journey depended on God's presence.

Numbers 10 · Grade 5

Return, Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 10 begins with the two silver trumpets. Made of beaten silver, they were blown by the priests for a statute forever. A blast on both gathered the whole congregation at the Tent of Meeting; one trumpet called only the leaders. An alarm signaled the camps to march, east side first. In battle against an oppressor, they were to sound an alarm, and you will be remembered before Yahweh your God, and you will be saved from your enemies. At feasts and new moons, the trumpets were a memorial before God.

On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year, the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle. For the first time, Israel set out from Sinai in the order God had commanded: Judah's camp first, then the Gershonites and Merarites with the tabernacle, then Reuben's camp, then the Kohathites bearing the sanctuary, then Ephraim's camp, and finally Dan's camp as the rear guard.

Moses urged Hobab, his relative, to come with them: Don't leave us, please; because you know how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes. He promised to share whatever good God gave them. The chapter ends with two short prayers that Israel would use for generations. When the ark set out: Rise up, Yahweh, and let your enemies be scattered! When it rested: Return, Yahweh, to the ten thousands of the thousands of Israel. Psalm 68:1 echoes this prayer.
