Numbered in the Wilderness

Name Date

Read the Story

Numbers begins one year after Israel left Egypt. God spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting. He told him to take a census, which means a count. Moses counted every man twenty years old and up who could go to war.

One leader from each of the twelve tribes stood with Moses. Their names are listed in the chapter. Moses and Aaron counted the people tribe by tribe, as God commanded.

The total was 603,550 men. The Levites were not counted among them. God gave them the job of carrying and guarding the tabernacle. They camped all around it. The chapter ends, so they did.

Numbers 1 · Grade 4

A Nation Organized

Name Date

Read and Think

The book of Numbers gets its name from the counts of Israel in chapters 1 and 26. The first census took place in the second year after leaving Egypt. God told Moses to count every male twenty years old and upward who was able to go to war, by families and fathers' houses.

Twelve tribal leaders helped. Their names show that God cared about each tribe and family. The count was carefully recorded tribe by tribe, and Judah was the largest. The total reached 603,550, showing how God had kept His promise to make Abraham's family great.

The Levites were not counted for war. They were set apart to care for the tabernacle, to take it down, carry it, and set it up again. They camped around it so that God's anger would not come on the people. Israel did everything God commanded.

Numbers 1 · Grade 5

Ready for the Journey

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers opens on the first day of the second month, in the second year after the exodus, as Yahweh speaks to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting. Israel had received the law and built the tabernacle. Now they needed to be organized for the journey to the promised land. God commanded a census of every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war.

A leader from each tribe stood with Moses and Aaron, from Elizur of Reuben to Ahira of Naphtali. The registration was by families and fathers' houses, and each name was declared. Judah had 74,600, the largest tribe, while Manasseh had the smallest number. The grand total was 603,550. This multitude showed that God's promise to Abraham, to make his offspring as the stars, was being fulfilled.

The Levites were deliberately left out of the military count. God appointed them over the tabernacle of the covenant and all its furnishings. They would carry it, care for it, and camp around it, so that there would be no wrath on the congregation. Thus the children of Israel did. According to all that Yahweh commanded Moses, so they did. The book begins with obedience, though it will later record failure and God's patient faithfulness.

Show What You Know

  1. When does Numbers open?

  2. Who was counted in the census?

  3. What did the large total show?

  4. Why did the Levites camp around the tabernacle?

  5. How does the book begin, and what will it later record?
