Remembering God's Goodness

Name Date

Read the Story

After the feast, the people met again to fast and pray. They stood and told God their sins. For part of the day they read God's law. For part of the day they confessed and worshiped.

The Levites led them in a long prayer. They praised God as the One who made heaven and earth. They remembered how God chose Abraham. They remembered how He brought Israel out of Egypt and through the sea. He led them with a pillar of cloud and fire. He gave them bread from heaven and water from the rock.

They told how their fathers turned away from God again and again. But God was ready to forgive. He was kind and full of mercy. He did not leave them. Now they made a promise in writing to follow God.

Memory Verse

“Nevertheless in your manifold mercies you didn’t make a full end of them, nor forsake them; for you are a gracious and merciful God.

God's Faithfulness, Our Unfaithfulness

Name Date

Read and Think

Later that month the people gathered again. They fasted and wore sackcloth. They stood and confessed their sins and the sins of their fathers. For a quarter of the day they read the law. For another quarter they confessed and worshiped Yahweh.

The Levites led a great prayer. It began with praise. You are Yahweh, even you alone, they prayed. You have made heaven and earth. Then they retold the story of God's faithfulness. He chose Abraham. He saw Israel's pain in Egypt. He split the sea. He led them by cloud and fire. He gave His law, and bread and water in the desert.

Yet the people rebelled again and again. When they cried out, God heard and rescued them. He was a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful. In His great mercy He did not forsake them. The prayer ended by admitting their present trouble. Then the leaders made a sure covenant in writing.

Nehemiah 9 · Grade 5

A Story of Grace

Name Date

Read and Think

On the twenty-fourth day of the month, the people assembled with fasting, sackcloth, and dirt on their heads. They separated themselves from foreigners for this time of confession, and stood confessing their sins and the iniquities of their fathers. They read from the law for a fourth part of the day and confessed and worshiped Yahweh for another fourth.

The Levites' prayer is one of the longest in the Bible. It opens with praise: You are Yahweh, even you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, and you preserve them all. Then it walks through Israel's history: the call of Abraham and the covenant, the deliverance from Egypt, the pillar of cloud and fire, the law at Sinai, manna and water from the rock, and the gift of the land.

Woven through the story is a sad refrain. Israel acted proudly, stiffened their necks, and would not listen. Yet God is a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness. Nevertheless in your manifold mercies you didn't make a full end of them, nor forsake them. The prayer ends with honest confession of their present distress and a sure covenant in writing. In the New Testament, John writes that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and righteous to forgive us (1 John 1:9).

Show What You Know

  1. How did the people prepare for confession?

  2. How does the prayer begin?

  3. Name three events from Israel's history in the prayer.

  4. What words describe God's character in this prayer?

  5. How does the prayer end?

  2. Israel's history shows God's faithfulness despite people's unfaithfulness. Where can you see God's faithfulness in your own story?
