Nehemiah 9 · Grade 4
God's Faithfulness, Our Unfaithfulness
Read and Think
Later that month the people gathered again. They fasted and wore sackcloth. They stood and confessed their sins and the sins of their fathers. For a quarter of the day they read the law. For another quarter they confessed and worshiped Yahweh.
The Levites led a great prayer. It began with praise. You are Yahweh, even you alone, they prayed. You have made heaven and earth. Then they retold the story of God's faithfulness. He chose Abraham. He saw Israel's pain in Egypt. He split the sea. He led them by cloud and fire. He gave His law, and bread and water in the desert.
Yet the people rebelled again and again. When they cried out, God heard and rescued them. He was a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful. In His great mercy He did not forsake them. The prayer ended by admitting their present trouble. Then the leaders made a sure covenant in writing.
