Read the Story

All the people came to the city. They asked Ezra to bring God's book. Ezra stood up high. He read it to them.

He read from morning to noon. The people stood up. They said amen. They bowed to God. Helpers told what it meant. The people cried when they heard it.

The leaders said not to cry. This was a happy day! The joy of God is our strength. So they ate and shared food. They made huts and were full of joy.

The Joy of the Lord

Name Date

Read the Story

In the seventh month, all the people gathered as one man at the water gate. They asked Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses. Ezra stood on a wooden platform and read from early morning until noon. The ears of all the people listened.

When Ezra opened the book, all the people stood up. Ezra blessed Yahweh, and the people said amen. They lifted their hands and bowed down to worship. The Levites read the law clearly and explained it, so the people understood.

The people wept when they heard the law. But the leaders told them not to be sad, for the joy of Yahweh is your strength. They ate, shared food, and were glad. The next day they found that God's law told them to live in booths. So they made booths from branches and had very great joy.

Memory Verse

Hearing and Understanding

Name Date

Read and Think

The wall was done in the sixth month. In the seventh month, the people gathered as one at the water gate. They asked Ezra to bring the book of the law of Moses. Ezra read it from early morning until midday. Men, women, and all who could understand listened closely.

Ezra stood on a wooden pulpit made for the purpose. When he opened the book, all the people stood up. He blessed Yahweh, the great God. The people lifted their hands and answered with Amen, Amen. Then they bowed with their faces to the ground. The Levites read distinctly and gave the sense, so the people understood the reading.

The people wept as they heard the law. Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites said the day was holy. They told them to eat, drink, and send portions to those with nothing. Don't be grieved, for the joy of Yahweh is your strength. Later they kept the feast of booths with very great gladness. Ezra read from the law every day.

Revival Through the Word

Name Date

Read and Think

The wall was finished, but Nehemiah 8 shows that God's people needed more than stone. In the seventh month all the people gathered as one man at the water gate. It was the people themselves who told Ezra to bring the book of the law of Moses. Ezra read from early morning until midday, and the ears of all the people were attentive.

Standing on a wooden pulpit, Ezra opened the book in the sight of all, and the people stood. He blessed Yahweh, the great God, and they lifted their hands and answered with Amen, Amen, then worshiped with their faces to the ground. The Levites read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly, and gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading. Reading and explaining went together.

Conviction followed: the people wept as they heard the law. But the leaders declared the day holy and told them to feast and share portions with those who had nothing, for the joy of Yahweh is your strength. Discovering the command about booths, they built them on roofs and in courts. Since the days of Joshua the son of Nun, Israel had not kept it so, and there was very great gladness. In the New Testament, Paul writes that every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching (2 Timothy 3:16).

Show What You Know

  1. Who asked Ezra to bring the book of the law?

  2. How did the people respond physically to God's word?

  3. What two things did the Levites do with the law?

  4. What did the leaders tell the weeping people?

  5. How long had it been since Israel kept the feast of booths this way?
