Revival Through the Word

Read and Think

The wall was finished, but Nehemiah 8 shows that God's people needed more than stone. In the seventh month all the people gathered as one man at the water gate. It was the people themselves who told Ezra to bring the book of the law of Moses. Ezra read from early morning until midday, and the ears of all the people were attentive.

Standing on a wooden pulpit, Ezra opened the book in the sight of all, and the people stood. He blessed Yahweh, the great God, and they lifted their hands and answered with Amen, Amen, then worshiped with their faces to the ground. The Levites read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly, and gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading. Reading and explaining went together.

Conviction followed: the people wept as they heard the law. But the leaders declared the day holy and told them to feast and share portions with those who had nothing, for the joy of Yahweh is your strength. Discovering the command about booths, they built them on roofs and in courts. Since the days of Joshua the son of Nun, Israel had not kept it so, and there was very great gladness. In the New Testament, Paul writes that every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching (2 Timothy 3:16).

  3. What two things did the Levites do with the law?

  4. What did the leaders tell the weeping people?

  5. How long had it been since Israel kept the feast of booths this way?

Think About It

  1. The people wept over their sin but were told to rejoice in God. How do sorrow for sin and joy in God belong together for a Christian?

  2. The people asked to hear God's word. How could you show a hunger for Scripture this week?

Memory Verse
