Nehemiah 7 · Grade 3

Faithful Gatekeepers

Name Date

Read the Story

When the wall was built and the doors were set up, Nehemiah chose gatekeepers, singers, and Levites. He put his brother Hanani in charge of Jerusalem. He also chose Hananiah. Hananiah was a faithful man who feared God more than many.

Nehemiah told them not to open the gates until the sun was hot. He had the people of the city keep watch, each one near his own house.

The city was wide and large, but the people were few. Not many houses were built. God put it into Nehemiah's heart to gather the people. He found the book of names of those who came back first. It counted more than forty-two thousand people. Many gave gold and silver for the work.

Nehemiah 7 · Grade 4

A City That Needs People

Name Date

Read and Think

With the wall built and the doors hung, Nehemiah turned to keeping the city safe. He appointed gatekeepers, singers, and Levites. He put his brother Hanani and Hananiah in charge. Hananiah was a faithful man and feared God above many. Character mattered more to Nehemiah than skill alone.

He gave clear orders. The gates were not to open until the sun was hot. They were to be shut and barred while people stood guard. Each person would watch near his own house.

But the city was wide and large, and the people were few. Houses had not been built. Nehemiah wrote that God put it into his heart to gather the people. He found the genealogy of those who came up at the first. It is the same list found in Ezra 2. It shows the whole assembly of 42,360 and the gifts they gave for the work.

Nehemiah 7 · Grade 5

Walls Need People

Name Date

Read and Think

Finishing the wall did not finish Nehemiah's work. A wall protects only if it is guarded, and a city lives only if people dwell in it. Nehemiah appointed gatekeepers, singers, and Levites. He placed Jerusalem under Hanani and Hananiah. Of Hananiah he wrote that he was a faithful man and feared God above many. Nehemiah valued godly character in those who would lead.

His security orders were practical. The gates would stay closed until the sun was hot, and guards would stand by while they were shut and barred. Residents would keep watch, each in his station and each across from his own house. Faith in God did not make Nehemiah careless.

Yet a deeper problem remained: the city was wide and large, but the people were few, and the houses were not built. Nehemiah wrote that God put it into his heart to gather the nobles and people for a census. He found the genealogy of the first returnees, nearly identical to Ezra 2. The list ends with gifts for the work, including a thousand darics of gold from the governor. God's city needed God's people.

Show What You Know

  1. Why was finishing the wall not the end of the work?

  2. What did Nehemiah say about Hananiah's character?

  3. What were the orders about the gates?

  4. What did God put into Nehemiah's heart?

  5. How does the genealogy list end?
