Read the Story

While the wall was being built, there was a great cry from the people. Food was short. Some had to give up their fields and houses to buy grain. Others had to borrow money to pay the king's tax. Their own people charged them too much.

Nehemiah was very angry. He called the leaders together. He told them that what they did was not good. He asked them to walk in the fear of God. He told them to give back the fields, the vineyards, and the houses.

The leaders said they would do it. They made a promise before the priests. As governor, Nehemiah did not take the food the governor could have. He fed many people at his own table. He asked God to remember him for good.

Justice Among God's People

Name Date

Read and Think

While the wall rose, trouble grew inside the city. Food was scarce. Some families had to pledge their fields and houses to buy grain. Others borrowed to pay the king's tax. Worst of all, some children were being made servants to pay debts. Their own people were taking interest from them.

Nehemiah was very angry. He thought it over, then spoke to the nobles. He said that what they were doing was not good. He asked them to walk in the fear of God. He urged them to stop charging interest and to give back what they had taken.

The leaders agreed. Nehemiah made them swear it before the priests. All the assembly said Amen and praised Yahweh. For twelve years as governor, Nehemiah did not take the governor's food allowance. He fed a hundred fifty leaders at his table. He did this because of the fear of God.

Nehemiah 5 · Grade 5

Rebuilding a Just Community

Name Date

Read and Think

A wall cannot protect a community that is tearing itself apart. In Nehemiah 5 a great cry rose from the people against their fellow Jews. During a famine, families mortgaged fields, vineyards, and houses to buy grain. Others borrowed to pay the king's tribute. Some sons and daughters were brought into bondage, and the parents had no power to redeem them.

Nehemiah was very angry, but he consulted with himself before acting. Then he rebuked the nobles and rulers for exacting usury from their own brothers. He asked whether they ought not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the nations. He admitted that he too had lent money and grain, and he called them all to leave off this usury and restore fields and houses at once.

They agreed, and Nehemiah had them take an oath before the priests. The whole assembly said Amen and praised Yahweh. Nehemiah's own example backed his words. As governor for twelve years he refused the governor's bread, did not buy land, and fed a hundred fifty Jews and rulers at his table. He prayed, Remember me, my God, for all the good that I have done for this people.

  1. What drove families to mortgage their property?

  2. What did Nehemiah do before he rebuked the nobles?

  3. What reason did he give for walking in the fear of God?

  4. What did Nehemiah admit about himself?

  5. How did Nehemiah's own example back his words?
