Nehemiah prayed to God. The people kept on building. They had a mind to work! Soon the wall was half done. Then the bad men planned to stop them.

The people prayed. They kept watch all day and all night. Nehemiah told them not to be afraid. He said God is great. When they heard the horn, they would come. God would fight for them.

Prayer and Watching

Name Date

Read the Story

Sanballat and Tobiah made fun of the builders. Tobiah said that if a fox went up on the wall, it would break it down. Nehemiah prayed and asked God to hear how they were mocked. The people kept building. The wall was joined to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.

Then the enemies planned to come and stop the work. The builders felt tired, and some were afraid. So they prayed to God and set a watch day and night.

Nehemiah told them not to be afraid. He told them to remember the Lord, who is great and awesome. From then on, half the men worked and half kept watch. A man with a trumpet stood by Nehemiah. If they heard it, they were to come together. God would fight for them.

Work, Watch, and Pray

Name Date

Read and Think

Sanballat grew angry when he heard about the wall. He mocked the Jews before his friends. He asked if they could bring the burned stones back to life. Tobiah joked that a fox could break down their wall. Nehemiah did not argue. He prayed. The people kept building until the wall was joined to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.

Then the enemies plotted to attack and cause confusion. The people of Judah grew tired. There was so much rubbish to clear. Neighbors warned of danger again and again. But Nehemiah wrote, we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch.

Nehemiah placed families along the low places of the wall. He told them not to be afraid but to remember the Lord, who is great and awesome. From then on, half worked and half stood guard. Builders worked with one hand and held a weapon with the other. A trumpeter stood by Nehemiah. Our God will fight for us, he said.

Nehemiah 4 · Grade 5

Faith That Builds and Watches

Name Date

Read and Think

Opposition sharpened as the wall rose. Sanballat was furious and mocked the feeble Jews before the army of Samaria. He asked whether they would revive the burned stones out of the heaps of rubbish. Tobiah added that even a fox would break down their stone wall. Nehemiah answered with prayer, handing the insult to God. Meanwhile, the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.

Mockery turned to plotting. Enemies from every side conspired to fight against Jerusalem and cause confusion. Inside, discouragement spread: the strength of the burden bearers was fading, and there was much rubbish. Jews living nearby warned ten times of danger. Nehemiah's response joined faith and action: we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night.

Nehemiah stationed families in the exposed places and spoke to the nobles and people: Don't be afraid of them! Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome. When the enemies learned their plot was known, God brought their counsel to nothing. From then on, half the men worked and half held spears and shields. The builders worked with a sword at their side. The trumpeter stood ready, for Our God will fight for us.

  2. How did Nehemiah respond to the insults?

  3. What two problems discouraged the people inside the city?
