Everyone Builds

Name Date

Read the Story

The wall of the city was broken. So the people got to work. The priests built a gate.

Each group took a part. Some built near their own homes. Men from other towns came to help. A man and his girls built too.

Some big men would not help. But lots of people did. They built the wall one part at a time. God's work is for all of us.

Memory Verse

“Above the horse gate, the priests made repairs, everyone across from his own house.”

Nehemiah 3 · Grade 3

Building Side by Side

Name Date

Read the Story

Nehemiah 3 is a list of builders. Eliashib the high priest and the priests went first. They built the sheep gate and set up its doors. Then the next group built beside them, and the next beside them.

All kinds of people worked. There were goldsmiths and perfume makers. There were rulers and Levites. Men came from towns like Jericho and Tekoa. Shallum worked with his daughters. Many people fixed the part of the wall across from their own houses.

Not everyone helped. The nobles of Tekoa would not work. But the men of Tekoa fixed two parts of the wall! Each person did a part, and together they built the whole wall.

Nehemiah 3 · Grade 4

Every Name Matters

Name Date

Read and Think

Nehemiah 3 can look like a long list of names. But it shows how God's people rebuilt the wall. Eliashib the high priest led the way. He and the priests built the sheep gate and set it apart to God.

The builders came from every part of life. Goldsmiths and perfume makers did hard work with stone. Rulers of districts picked up tools. Shallum built with his daughters. Men came from towns like Jericho, Tekoa, and Gibeon. Many repaired the part of the wall across from their own homes.

One sad note shows up. The nobles of the Tekoites did not put their necks to the work. Yet the common men of Tekoa repaired two sections. God saw and recorded each worker. The wall rose because many people each did a part.

Show What You Know

  1. Who built the sheep gate?

  2. Name two unusual builders in the list.

  3. Where did many people choose to build?

  4. Who refused to work?

  5. How many sections did the men of Tekoa repair?

  2. Many built near their own homes. What part of God's work is right next to you, at home or in your church?

Nehemiah 3 · Grade 5

The Body at Work

Name Date

Read and Think

Nehemiah 3 reads like a construction roster, and that is its point. The chapter moves around the wall, gate by gate, naming who built each section. It begins with Eliashib the high priest, who with the priests built and sanctified the sheep gate. Spiritual leaders went first.

The list is remarkable for its variety. Goldsmiths and perfumers, men used to fine work, hauled stone. Rulers of half-districts labored beside common men. Shallum repaired with his daughters. Men came from Jericho, Tekoa, Gibeon, and Mizpah. Many repaired the portion across from their own houses, guarding what they loved most.

Not everyone joined. The nobles of the Tekoites did not put their necks to the Lord's work. Yet the ordinary Tekoites repaired a second section. Scripture remembers both. In the New Testament, Paul says the church is one body with many members (1 Corinthians 12:12). Nehemiah's wall is a picture of that truth.

Show What You Know

  1. Who built the first section named?

  2. What shows the variety of the builders?

  3. What portion did many people repair?

  4. What did the nobles of the Tekoites fail to do?

  5. What New Testament picture fits this chapter?
