Nehemiah 2 · Grade 5

Prayer, Courage, and Planning

Name Date

Read and Think

For four months Nehemiah carried his burden. Then, in the month Nisan, his sadness showed before King Artaxerxes. In that court a sad face could be dangerous. Nehemiah was very much afraid, yet he answered honestly that the city of his fathers' tombs lay waste.

When the king asked his request, Nehemiah prayed to the God of heaven. His quick prayer rested on months of prayer before it. He then asked boldly: send me to build the city. He had a plan ready, with a time, letters to the governors, and timber from Asaph, keeper of the king's forest. The king granted it, according to the good hand of God on him.

Arriving in Jerusalem, Nehemiah inspected the walls by night and told no one at first. Then he called the leaders to rebuild so they would no longer be a reproach. He told of God's good hand, and they said, Let's rise up and build. When Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem mocked and accused them of rebellion, Nehemiah answered that the God of heaven would prosper His servants.
