Keeping the Promises

Name Date

Read the Story

Nehemiah went back to the king for a time. While he was gone, Eliashib the priest gave Tobiah a room in God's house. That room was meant for gifts to God. When Nehemiah came back, he was upset. He threw out Tobiah's things and had the rooms cleaned.

He found that the Levites had not been given their share. They had gone back to their fields. Nehemiah spoke to the leaders. Then all Judah brought the tithe of grain, new wine, and oil.

He saw people working and selling on the Sabbath. Nehemiah reminded them of God's law. He shut the city gates on the Sabbath. He also corrected those who had broken their promise about marriage. Again and again he prayed, Remember me, my God, for good.

Faithful to the End

Name Date

Read and Think

Nehemiah returned to King Artaxerxes for a while. During that time, the people began to slip. Eliashib the priest gave Tobiah, an old enemy, a large room in the courts of God's house. When Nehemiah returned, he was grieved. He threw out Tobiah's household goods and had the rooms cleansed. Then he put back the vessels and offerings.

He also learned the Levites had not received their portions. They had gone back to their fields. Nehemiah contended with the rulers. He asked why the house of God was forsaken. Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the oil.

On the Sabbath, people trod winepresses and sold food in Jerusalem. Nehemiah warned the nobles. He shut the gates before the Sabbath. Some men had married wives who worshiped other gods. Their children could not speak the language of Judah. Nehemiah corrected them firmly and reminded them how Solomon was led into sin. He closed with a prayer: Remember me, my God, for good.

Reform and Remembrance

Name Date

Read and Think

The book ends not with a triumph but with a struggle. When the law was read, the people separated from Israel the mixed multitude. Yet while Nehemiah was away with Artaxerxes, Eliashib the priest prepared for Tobiah, an Ammonite and longtime opponent, a great chamber where offerings had been stored. Returning, Nehemiah was grieved, threw out all of Tobiah's household stuff, and commanded the rooms to be cleansed.

Neglect had followed compromise. The portions of the Levites had not been given, so the Levites and singers had fled to their fields. Nehemiah contended with the rulers and asked why the house of God was forsaken, the very thing they had vowed not to do in chapter 10. Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the oil to the treasuries, and he appointed faithful treasurers.

He found people treading winepresses on the Sabbath and Tyrians selling fish. He testified against the nobles and shut the gates as it grew dark before the Sabbath. Finally he contended with men who had married wives of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab, whose children could not speak the language of Judah, warning them by Solomon's example. Three times in this chapter Nehemiah prays that God would remember him. The final words are Remember me, my God, for good. The chapter shows the need for a deeper renewal. In the New Testament, Hebrews describes the new covenant, in which God writes His laws on His people's hearts (Hebrews 8:10).
