The Joy of Jerusalem

Name Date

Read the Story

The wall was finished, and it was time to give it to God. The leaders brought the Levites to Jerusalem. They came to celebrate with thanks and singing. They brought cymbals, harps, and lyres.

The priests and Levites made themselves clean before God. Then they made the people, the gates, and the wall clean. Nehemiah put two great choirs on top of the wall. One went to the right, and one went the other way. Both groups met at the house of God.

There they offered great gifts and were very glad. God had made them rejoice with great joy. The women and children rejoiced too. The joy of Jerusalem was heard far away. Then men were put in charge of the storerooms. The people gave gladly to the singers and gatekeepers.

Dedicated with Thanksgiving

Name Date

Read and Think

The chapter begins with lists of priests and Levites. They go back to those who came with Zerubbabel and Jeshua. Then comes the great day: the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem. The Levites were sought out from all their places. They came to keep the dedication with gladness, thanksgiving, and singing.

First the priests and Levites purified themselves. Then they purified the people, the gates, and the wall. Nehemiah brought the princes of Judah up on the wall. He appointed two great choirs that gave thanks. One went with Ezra the scribe, and one went with Nehemiah. They walked in opposite directions on top of the wall. They met at the house of God.

They offered great sacrifices that day and rejoiced. God had made them rejoice with great joy. The women and the children also rejoiced, so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even far away. Leaders were also chosen to care for the storerooms. The people gladly gave portions for the singers and gatekeepers.

Nehemiah 12 · Grade 5

Joy That Was Heard Far Away

Name Date

Read and Think

Nehemiah 12 opens with lists of priests and Levites from Zerubbabel's day through later generations. The lists show continuity: God kept a line of servants for His house. Then the chapter reaches its high point, the dedication of the wall. The Levites were sought out from all their places to keep the dedication with gladness, with thanksgiving, and with singing, with cymbals, stringed instruments, and harps.

Purification came before celebration. The priests and the Levites purified themselves; and they purified the people, the gates, and the wall. Nehemiah then brought the princes up on the wall and appointed two great companies that gave thanks. One went right, led by Ezra the scribe, and the other went the opposite way with Nehemiah. The choirs circled the city and met at the house of God.

They offered great sacrifices that day, and rejoiced, for God had made them rejoice with great joy. The women and children also rejoiced, so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even far away. The joy came from God and spread to every age. The chapter closes with practical care: men over the storerooms for tithes and firstfruits, and all Israel giving daily portions to the singers and gatekeepers. Joyful worship and faithful giving went together.

Show What You Know

  1. What do the opening lists show?

  2. What came before the celebration?

  3. How were the two companies arranged?
