Nehemiah 12 · Grade 5
Joy That Was Heard Far Away
Read and Think
Nehemiah 12 opens with lists of priests and Levites from Zerubbabel's day through later generations. The lists show continuity: God kept a line of servants for His house. Then the chapter reaches its high point, the dedication of the wall. The Levites were sought out from all their places to keep the dedication with gladness, with thanksgiving, and with singing, with cymbals, stringed instruments, and harps.
Purification came before celebration. The priests and the Levites purified themselves; and they purified the people, the gates, and the wall. Nehemiah then brought the princes up on the wall and appointed two great companies that gave thanks. One went right, led by Ezra the scribe, and the other went the opposite way with Nehemiah. The choirs circled the city and met at the house of God.
They offered great sacrifices that day, and rejoiced, for God had made them rejoice with great joy. The women and children also rejoiced, so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even far away. The joy came from God and spread to every age. The chapter closes with practical care: men over the storerooms for tithes and firstfruits, and all Israel giving daily portions to the singers and gatekeepers. Joyful worship and faithful giving went together.
