Great Faith and Great Power

Name Date

Read the Story

A man with a skin disease called leprosy came to Jesus. He said, "Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean." Jesus touched him and said, "I want to. Be made clean." Right away he was healed!

A Roman soldier called a centurion asked Jesus to heal his servant. He said Jesus did not need to come to his house. "Just say the word, and my servant will be healed." Jesus was amazed at his faith, and the servant was healed that very hour.

Later Jesus and His disciples were in a boat when a great storm came. Jesus was asleep. The disciples cried, "Save us, Lord! We are dying!" Jesus rebuked the wind and the sea, and there was a great calm. The disciples asked, "What kind of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?"

Memory Verse

The centurion answered, “Lord, I’m not worthy for you to come under my roof. Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.

Matthew 8 · Grade 4

Lord Over Everything

Name Date

Read and Think

After the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew shows Jesus' power in action. A man with leprosy, a disease that made people outcasts, knelt and said, "Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean." Jesus reached out and touched him, something no one else would do, and the man was healed.

A Roman centurion, a Gentile officer, asked Jesus to heal his paralyzed servant. He understood authority: Jesus only needed to speak. Jesus marveled and said He had not found such great faith even in Israel. Many would come from east and west to the Kingdom. Jesus also healed Peter's mother-in-law and many others, fulfilling Isaiah's words that He took our sicknesses.

Then Jesus calmed a violent storm, asking His frightened disciples, "Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?" On the other side of the lake, two men troubled by demons met Him. The demons knew who He was and were afraid. At His word they left the men, showing that Jesus has authority even over evil.

Show What You Know

  1. Why was Jesus touching the man with leprosy so surprising?

  2. What did the centurion understand about Jesus?

  3. What prophecy did Matthew say Jesus fulfilled by healing?

  4. What four kinds of power did Jesus show in this chapter?

Think About It

  1. The centurion trusted that Jesus' word was enough. What promise of Jesus can you trust today?

  2. When are you afraid? What does this chapter teach you about trusting Jesus in scary times?

Memory Verse

The men marveled, saying, “What kind of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Matthew 8 · Grade 5

The Authority of the King

Name Date

Read and Think

Matthew 8 and 9 contain ten miracles that show the King's authority. The first three are for people often pushed aside: a man with leprosy, a Gentile soldier's servant, and a woman, Peter's mother-in-law. Jesus brings God's Kingdom to the unclean, the outsider and the overlooked.

The centurion is a model of faith. He calls himself unworthy to have Jesus under his roof, yet he is certain Jesus can heal by command, just as he gives orders to soldiers. Jesus says many from east and west will feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, while some who assumed they belonged will be left out. Faith, not birthright, receives the King.

Following Jesus has a cost: the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head. In the storm, the disciples learn who He is. Only God rules the raging sea, yet Jesus rebukes the wind with a word. In the country of the Gergesenes, demons cry out, "What do we have to do with you, Jesus, Son of God?" Jesus sends them away. Sadly, the townspeople ask Jesus to leave, valuing their losses more than the men set free.

Show What You Know

  1. What do the people healed in the first three miracles have in common?

  2. Why did the centurion say Jesus did not need to come to his house?

  3. What did Jesus teach about who will be at the feast with Abraham?

  4. How does the calming of the storm reveal who Jesus is?

  5. How did the townspeople respond after the men were freed?

  1. What Jesus was doing when the storm came.
  2. Where Jesus and His disciples were in the storm.
  3. A soldier with great faith.

Down

  1. What everything became when Jesus spoke.
  2. The centurion asked Jesus to heal his ____.
  3. Jesus spoke to the ____ and the sea.

Think About It

  1. The disciples followed Jesus into the boat and still faced a storm. What does that teach about following Jesus?

  2. Why do you think some people would rather Jesus leave than change things in their lives?

Memory Verse

When Jesus heard it, he marveled and said to those who followed, “Most certainly I tell you, I haven’t found so great a faith, not even in Israel.
