Matthew 8 · Grade 5
The Authority of the King
Read and Think
Matthew 8 and 9 contain ten miracles that show the King's authority. The first three are for people often pushed aside: a man with leprosy, a Gentile soldier's servant, and a woman, Peter's mother-in-law. Jesus brings God's Kingdom to the unclean, the outsider and the overlooked.
The centurion is a model of faith. He calls himself unworthy to have Jesus under his roof, yet he is certain Jesus can heal by command, just as he gives orders to soldiers. Jesus says many from east and west will feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, while some who assumed they belonged will be left out. Faith, not birthright, receives the King.
Following Jesus has a cost: the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head. In the storm, the disciples learn who He is. Only God rules the raging sea, yet Jesus rebukes the wind with a word. In the country of the Gergesenes, demons cry out, "What do we have to do with you, Jesus, Son of God?" Jesus sends them away. Sadly, the townspeople ask Jesus to leave, valuing their losses more than the men set free.
