Jesus Teaches Us to Pray

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus taught His friends how to pray. He said to talk to God as our Father in heaven. We can ask Him for our daily bread. We can ask Him to forgive us.

Jesus said not to worry. Look at the birds! They do not plant food, but God feeds them. You are worth more than birds.

Look at the flowers! They are beautiful, and God dresses them. God knows what you need. Trust Him and put Him first.

Memory Verse

“See the birds of the sky, that they don’t sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more value than they?”

Matthew 6 · Grade 3

Seek First the Kingdom

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus taught that when we give, pray, or fast, we should do it for God and not to show off. God sees what we do in secret, and He rewards us. When we pray, we do not need to use many words. God already knows what we need.

Jesus taught the Lord's Prayer. It begins, "Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy." We pray for God's Kingdom to come, for daily bread, for forgiveness, and for help against evil. Jesus said we must forgive others too.

Jesus said not to store up treasures on earth, where things break or get stolen, but to store up treasures in heaven. Do not worry about food or clothes. God feeds the birds and clothes the lilies. "seek first God's Kingdom and his righteousness;" and all these things will be given to you.

Memory Verse

“But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Matthew 6 · Grade 4

Your Father Knows

Name Date

Read and Think

In Matthew 6 Jesus warns against doing good things to be noticed by people. When you give to the needy, pray, or fast, do it quietly. "Your Father who sees in secret will reward you." Our worship is for God, not for applause.

Jesus also teaches His disciples a pattern for prayer. The Lord's Prayer begins with God: His name, His Kingdom, and His will. Then it asks for our needs: daily bread, forgiveness, and protection from temptation and evil. Jesus adds that those who forgive others will be forgiven by the Father.

Earthly treasure can rust or be stolen, but treasure in heaven lasts. "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Jesus says we cannot serve both God and money. Instead of worrying, look at the birds and the lilies, which God cares for. Our Father knows what we need, so we should seek first His Kingdom.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does Jesus warn against praying or giving to be seen?

  2. What does the first part of the Lord's Prayer focus on?

  3. What does Jesus say about where our treasure is?

  4. What two examples from nature did Jesus use to teach about worry?

Matthew 6 · Grade 5

Treasure in Heaven

Name Date

Read and Think

Jesus continues the Sermon on the Mount by turning to the motives of our hearts. Giving, praying and fasting are good, but hypocrites do them to be seen. They "have received their reward" already: people's praise. True disciples practice their faith before the Father, who sees in secret.

The Lord's Prayer is a model of humble trust. It starts by honoring God's name and longing for His Kingdom and will, "on earth as it is in heaven." Then it brings our daily needs, our sins, and our weakness to Him. Forgiveness is central: those who have been forgiven must forgive.

Jesus then asks what we treasure. Our eye, the lamp of the body, should be focused on God. No one can serve two masters, God and money. Worry is a sign of divided trust. The Father feeds the birds and clothes the grass, so how much more will He care for His children? Each day has enough trouble of its own; we can trust God for tomorrow.

Show What You Know

  1. What reward do hypocrites receive?

  2. What does it mean to pray that God's will be done on earth as it is in heaven?

  3. Why is forgiveness so important in Jesus' teaching on prayer?

  4. Why can no one serve two masters?

  5. What argument does Jesus make from the birds and the grass?
