Matthew 6 · Grade 5
Treasure in Heaven
Read and Think
Jesus continues the Sermon on the Mount by turning to the motives of our hearts. Giving, praying and fasting are good, but hypocrites do them to be seen. They "have received their reward" already: people's praise. True disciples practice their faith before the Father, who sees in secret.
The Lord's Prayer is a model of humble trust. It starts by honoring God's name and longing for His Kingdom and will, "on earth as it is in heaven." Then it brings our daily needs, our sins, and our weakness to Him. Forgiveness is central: those who have been forgiven must forgive.
Jesus then asks what we treasure. Our eye, the lamp of the body, should be focused on God. No one can serve two masters, God and money. Worry is a sign of divided trust. The Father feeds the birds and clothes the grass, so how much more will He care for His children? Each day has enough trouble of its own; we can trust God for tomorrow.
