The Blessed Life

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus saw the crowds, went up on a mountain, and taught His disciples. He began with blessings called the Beatitudes. Blessed are the poor in spirit. Blessed are those who mourn and the gentle. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.

Blessed are the merciful, the pure in heart, and the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Jesus said His followers are like salt, which adds flavor. They are also like light, which helps people see. We should let our good works shine so others glorify our Father in heaven.

Jesus taught that God cares about our hearts, not just our actions. Being angry and saying mean things is wrong too. Jesus even said to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. That is how God's children act, because God is kind to everyone.

Memory Verse

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.”

Upside-Down Blessings

Name Date

Read and Think

The Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5 to 7, is Jesus' most famous teaching. It begins with the Beatitudes. Jesus says the blessed ones are not the proud and powerful. They are the poor in spirit, the mourning and the gentle. They are those hungry for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart and the peacemakers. They are also those persecuted for doing right.

Jesus then gives two pictures. His followers are the salt of the earth, which preserves and flavors. They are also the light of the world, like a city on a hill that cannot be hidden. "Let your light shine before men," He says, "that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."

Jesus said He came not to destroy the Law but to fulfill it. God's commands reach the heart: anger and insults are serious, lust is sin. And our yes should mean yes. Instead of revenge, Jesus teaches us to turn the other cheek, go the extra mile, and love our enemies, just as our Father sends rain on the good and the evil.

Matthew 5 · Grade 5

Righteousness of the Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

Like Moses receiving the Law on a mountain, Jesus sits on a mountain to teach the people of God's Kingdom. The Beatitudes describe what Kingdom people are like and what God promises them. Those who know their spiritual poverty receive the Kingdom; those who mourn are comforted; the meek inherit the earth. These blessings turn the world's values upside down.

Jesus declares that He came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, and that His followers' righteousness must exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees. Then six times He says, "You have heard that it was said... but I tell you." He shows that murder begins with anger, adultery begins with lust, and truthfulness means needing no oaths.

The high point is love. The old saying was to love your neighbor and hate your enemy, but Jesus says, "Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you." God shows kindness even to the unthankful, and His children should resemble Him. "Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect."

Show What You Know

  1. How is Jesus on the mountain like Moses?

  2. What did Jesus say about the righteousness of His followers compared to the Pharisees?

  3. What pattern does Jesus repeat six times?

  4. According to Jesus, where do murder and adultery begin?

  5. Why should God's children love their enemies?
