Jesus Wins Over Temptation

Name Date

Read the Story

The Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness. Jesus fasted for forty days and was hungry. The devil came to tempt Him. He said, "If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."

Jesus answered with Scripture. People do not live by bread only. They live by every word from God. The devil tempted Him two more times, even offering Him all the kingdoms of the world. Each time Jesus answered with God's Word and said no. Then the devil left, and angels came and served Jesus.

Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." He called fishermen to follow Him, and they left everything. Jesus went all over Galilee. He taught and preached the good news. He healed every kind of sickness.

Memory Verse

But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of God’s mouth.’”

Armed With the Word

Read and Think

Right after His baptism, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. After fasting forty days and nights, He was hungry, and the devil came to tempt Him. First the devil said, "If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." Jesus answered from Deuteronomy that people live by every word that comes from God's mouth.

Next the devil took Jesus to the top of the temple and twisted Scripture, daring Him to throw Himself down. Then he offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if He would bow and worship him. Each time Jesus answered, "It is written," and finally commanded, "Get behind me, Satan!" Jesus would worship and serve God alone.

After this, Jesus began preaching in Galilee, bringing light to people sitting in darkness, as Isaiah had said. He called Peter, Andrew, James and John, and they immediately left their nets and their boat to follow Him. Large crowds came as Jesus taught and healed.

Show What You Know

  1. What were the three temptations?

  2. What phrase did Jesus use each time He answered?

The Faithful Son in the Wilderness

Name Date

Read and Think

Israel, God's son, was tested in the wilderness for forty years and often failed. Now Jesus, God's true Son, is led by the Spirit into the wilderness for forty days. Each of His replies comes from Deuteronomy, the book that recalls Israel's wilderness journey. Where Israel grumbled and turned to idols, Jesus trusted and obeyed.

The devil's temptations aimed at Jesus' identity: "If you are the Son of God..." He tempted Jesus to meet His own needs without trusting the Father, to force God to prove His care, and to take a crown without the cross. Satan even quoted a psalm, but out of context. Jesus refused every shortcut and said, "You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only."

Then Jesus' public ministry began. Matthew quotes Isaiah: the people sitting in darkness saw a great light. Jesus called ordinary fishermen to become fishers for people, and they followed immediately. He taught in synagogues, preached the good news of the Kingdom, and healed every disease, and His fame spread through all Syria.

Show What You Know

  1. How does Jesus' forty days in the wilderness connect to Israel's history?

  2. Which Old Testament book did Jesus quote in all three answers?

  3. What did each temptation try to get Jesus to do?

  4. How did the devil misuse Scripture?

  5. What prophecy did Jesus fulfill by preaching in Galilee?
