Get Ready for the King

Name Date

Read the Story

John the Baptist preached in the wilderness of Judea. He said, "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!" To repent means to turn away from sin and turn to God. John was getting people ready for Jesus.

People from Jerusalem and all around came to John. They confessed their sins and were baptized in the Jordan River. John said someone greater was coming after him. He said he was not even worthy to carry His sandals.

Then Jesus came from Galilee to be baptized. John said Jesus should baptize him instead! But Jesus said it was right to do it. When Jesus came up from the water, the Spirit of God came down like a dove. The Father spoke from heaven: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

The Father, the Son and the Spirit

Name Date

Read and Think

John the Baptist was a prophet who prepared the way for Jesus. Isaiah had written about a voice crying in the wilderness, "Make the way of the Lord ready!" John lived simply, wearing camel's hair and eating locusts and wild honey. And he called everyone to repent because the Kingdom of Heaven was near.

When some proud religious leaders came, John warned them that being Abraham's family was not enough. They needed to show real change, like a tree bearing good fruit. John also pointed beyond himself: the One coming after him would baptize with the Holy Spirit.

Jesus came to John at the Jordan. John objected, but Jesus said it was fitting to fulfill all righteousness. At His baptism we see the Trinity: the Son in the water, the Spirit descending like a dove, and the Father's voice saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

  2. What did John mean by bearing good fruit?

  3. What did John say the One coming after him would do?

Matthew 3 · Grade 5

Preparing the Way

Name Date

Read and Think

After about thirty years of silence about Jesus' life, Matthew introduces John the Baptist. His message is short and urgent: "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!" Matthew connects him to Isaiah's prophecy of a voice in the wilderness preparing the way of the Lord. Even John's clothing recalls the prophet Elijah.

Crowds came, confessing their sins and being baptized. But when Pharisees and Sadducees came, John spoke sharply. Family heritage could not save them; God could raise up children for Abraham from stones. True repentance produces fruit. John baptized with water, but the coming One would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire, and would separate wheat from chaff.

Jesus had no sin to confess, yet He was baptized, identifying with sinners and fulfilling all righteousness. Then heaven opened. The Spirit descended like a dove, and the Father declared, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." Before Jesus preached one sermon or did one miracle, the Father announced His love and approval.

Show What You Know

  1. How does Matthew connect John the Baptist to the Old Testament?

  2. Why did John warn the Pharisees and Sadducees?

  3. Contrast John's baptism with the baptism of the One coming after him.

  4. Why was Jesus baptized if He had no sin?

  5. What is significant about the Father's words before Jesus' ministry began?
