Matthew 28 · Grade 5

All Authority

Name Date

Read and Think

Matthew 28 is the climax of the Gospel. The resurrection vindicates everything Jesus said and did. Matthew's account emphasizes eyewitnesses: the faithful women who saw where He was buried are the first to see the empty tomb and the risen Lord. In a culture that often dismissed women's testimony, their central role is a sign of the account's honesty.

The angel's words, "he has risen, just like he said," remind readers that Jesus had predicted this repeatedly. The bribed guards' story actually confirms that the tomb was empty; the only question was how. Matthew notes that some of the eleven doubted, another honest detail. Worship and doubt can exist side by side, and Jesus still drew near to them.

The Great Commission ties together Matthew's themes. The Son of Man, given all authority as Daniel 7 foretold, sends His followers to all nations, fulfilling God's promise to bless all nations through Abraham. Disciples are made by baptizing into the one name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and by teaching obedience. The Gospel that began with Immanuel, which means God with us, ends with Jesus' promise: "I am with you always."
