The New Covenant

Read and Think

Matthew 26 begins the passion narrative, the account of Jesus' suffering. The plot of the leaders and the betrayal by Judas are set against the extravagant devotion of the woman at Bethany. Judas sold Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, the price of a slave, fulfilling what the prophets foretold (Zechariah 11; Matthew 27:9). The woman gave lavishly; Judas betrayed cheaply.

At the Passover, which remembered Israel's rescue from Egypt by the blood of a lamb, Jesus revealed the meaning of His death. The bread is His body given; the cup is His blood of the new covenant, the covenant promised in Jeremiah 31 in which God forgives sin and writes His law on hearts. Jesus is the true Passover Lamb, whose death brings forgiveness. He also promised to drink it new in His Father's Kingdom.

In Gethsemane, the Son wrestled in prayer, sorrowful even to death, and submitted to the Father's will: the "cup" of suffering and wrath against sin. His disciples slept. At His arrest He refused to resist, saying Scripture must be fulfilled. Before the Sanhedrin, Jesus declared He would be seen at God's right hand, coming on the clouds. Peter's three denials, foretold by Jesus, contrast with Jesus' faithful confession.
